Canada knocked out of FIFA Women’s World Cup

Australia beat Canada by four goals in their final group stage — Twitter / @TheMatildasCanada was eliminated from the FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing against Australia 4-0 in their last group B match at the Melbourn Rectangular Stadium, Australia.This was the first time Canada failed to qualify from the group stage at the Women’s World Cup since 2011. The home side had a bright start as they took a one-goal lead just after the eight minutes with Hayley Raso with a great finish. The goal was ruled offside at first but the decision was overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).Australia once again came dangerously close to doubling their lead but Kailen Sheridan’s vital save stopped the hosts from scoring.The Aussies continued their dominant display and doubled their lead in the 39th minute. Raso once again, scored from the home side after Sheridan failed to deal with a cross from a corner. Australia ended the first half with one step in the knockout stage thanks to a brace by Raso.The home side started the second half with the same intensity, making sure that Canada have no chance to get back into the game.During the 58th minute, Mary Fowler scored one more for the hosts who sent the ball to the far post, tripling her side’s lead.However, Canada tried to pull one back in the 66th minute but the effort was saved by Mackenzie Arnold.It looked like the game will end 3-0 but Australia were awarded a penalty in the additional award after Canada’s Jessie Fleming fouled Katrina Gorry inside the box.The penalty was easily converted by Stephanie Catley, who fired the ball into the left-bottom corner and beyond the keeper’s outstretched side.With the win, Australia qualified from the group stage in each of the last five consecutive Women’s World Cup tournaments (2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023).This was also the first time Australia won a World Cup game by four goals.
